Guangzhou, Foshan or Shenzhen? Choosing a China Sourcing City

Six practical comparisons covering products, suppliers, airports, travel and total purchasing cost.

Start with the product

The useful question is not simply which city is cheapest, but where you can find the right product at a comparable total cost. Guangzhou, Foshan and Shenzhen all support trade and manufacturing, yet the best starting point depends on your product and the purpose of your visit. Use this comparison to plan the search, then assess each supplier individually.

1. Industry focus

Guangzhou is useful for exploring specialised wholesale markets, varied products and the Canton Fair; its markets include textiles and leather goods. Foshan is a useful starting point for furniture, ceramics, project fit-out products, appliances and industrial goods. Lecong in Shunde is known for its furniture trade. Shenzhen has strong electronics, smart-device and technology supply chains. These are starting points rather than exclusive boundaries.

2. Purpose of the visit

For a broad survey of ready-made products, consider Guangzhou's relevant markets or trade-fair phase. For furniture or construction finishes for a project, investigate suppliers in Foshan. For a customised electronic device, arrange Shenzhen meetings that address components, engineering, testing and production. Define the outcome you want from every visit.

3. Showroom, trader or factory?

A showroom helps you see designs; a market helps you compare alternatives; a factory visit can help you understand production. All three cities have manufacturers, trading companies and agents. Ask which legal company will sign the contract, where manufacturing takes place and who is responsible for quality. A trading company may be suitable, provided its role and terms are clear.

4. International airports

Guangzhou is served by Baiyun International Airport and Shenzhen by Bao'an International Airport. Foshan also has Shadi Airport, but flight listings current in October 2026 show domestic services, so compare arriving via Guangzhou for Foshan visits. Check actual flights from your origin and the cost of reaching your hotel and first appointment.

5. Organising a multi-city trip

Guangzhou and Foshan are closely connected and can be combined when supplier addresses and appointments allow. Shenzhen needs an appropriate travel allocation. Estimate journeys using the full address of each factory rather than the city centre, and leave time to review meetings and handle delays.

6. Which city costs less?

There is no reliable city-wide ranking for every product. Compare quotations for the same specification, quantity, materials and packaging. Include sampling, customisation, local transport, inspection and shipping, and clarify the delivery point covered by each quote. Furniture packing volume and electronics components can change total cost substantially. Compare the complete purchasing cost, not only the price per unit.
